”‘I am now confident to travel to London on my own to meet up with my cousin and I was able to get a paid job working in a café, which was a big step for me. I would never have done this without their support.’
Our supported housing service offers support and accommodation that enables their customers to lead as independent life as they possibly can. Our Arthur Street service is based in Luton and provides support for adults experiencing mental health issues or learning disabilities.
Ferial was referred to our service by the her housing officer at the time and moved into Arthur Street in July 2012. Before she came to Arthur Street, she was struggling to live independently and was finding it hard to cope with day-to-days tasks.
With the support of Bernie and Colin from our Arthur Street team, Ferial has worked hard to develop her independence skills and now manages her own bank account and does her own chores. She also gained the confidence to apply for a job working in a café and travels to London on her own to meet up with her cousin.
Ferial says, ‘Before I moved here my grandmother cleaned my flat and managed my money for me, I now manage my bank account and do my chores myself. When I have a set back the staff are always there with encouragement. They help me find a way through.

Life in lockdown
During lockdown the team at Arthur Street found different ways to deliver support, while making sure everyone stayed safe and well. They helped Ferial and other residents continue to access GP services, mental health support and keep in contact with friends and loved ones.
‘The last year has been so difficult for me to maintain my mental health’, Ferial explained. ‘Once lockdown happened, all my support systems stopped. I was unable to see my family and go to my usual clubs. One day they were open, the next they were all closed – it was frightening.
‘Bernie and Colin were the one constant during this time. They supported me throughout lockdown and were the people I could rely on. I could speak to them about my concerns about the virus. They supported me to understand social distancing, wearing PPE and eased my worries’.
During the most recent lockdown, Ferial completed an IT course with NOAH Academy and is hoping this will lead to further training. Ferial says, ‘I was very pleased when I received my certificate. I cannot not thank Bernie and Colin enough they have been amazing just fantastic. I am very lucky to live at Arthur Street. ‘
