The Wornington Green Kitchen Garden was awarded Level 3 (Advancing) in the London in Bloom competition on Friday.
The garden is supported by Catalyst and run by several residents of Wornington Green. As well as eating the produce they grow – which this year included beetroot, radishes, pears, strawberries, celery, beans and chillis – the plot holders share the excess with each other and with the community.
The London in Bloom judges noted great improvements in the garden since last year, including the recruitment of more gardeners. They commended the encouragement of wildlife in the garden, the variety of produce and the good condition and maintenance of the beds. They also noted that children and families are involved with the planting.
London in Bloom is a campaign to support and empower communities to make their local area ‘safer, cleaner and greener’ through greening and gardening projects. Entries are invited annually from local authorities, parks and friends of parks groups, community groups, and schools across the region who wish to improve their local environment.
