Congratulations to six residents from our young person’s service (YPS) schemes, who recently completed a personal development programme with the Prince’s Trust. The programme was delivered over 12-weeks, giving them the opportunity to discover hidden talents, improve their confidence and gain a nationally-recognised qualification.

Most young people in our YPS schemes are homeless and will be with us for up to two years. During this time, all residents are expected to achieve six-months of education, training, work or volunteering to help them when they move-on from the scheme. For some residents, the first step is to attend a Princes Trust course, which helps them gain new skills and confidence.

Adapting support during Covid-19

Covid-19  and restrictions meant that we had to rethink the way we delivered  support and activities for young people. The YPS team quickly adapted to new ways of working, including  meetings by phone, twice daily welfare checks with residents and strict  Covid-19 cleaning regimes.

Resident training opportunities – such as the Prince’s Trust online personal development programme – have also played a vital part  As Project Manager, Marilyn said, ‘Many of our young people were feeling quite anxious during this last national lockdown. The Prince’s Trust programme gave them something to focus on and provided direction, when thinking about applying for college.’

What’s involved in the programme?

The programme lasts for 12-weeks with weekly group sessions, finishing off with a week-long residential at the end.

Our six successful residents started the programme in January 2021, and completed the entire programme online. The programme helped them connect with new people and learn more about working as a team. This included carrying out a project in their local community and giving a project presentation.

The young people also had  the opportunity to discuss their aspirations – and the qualifications they may need to do this. They also received support with writing CVs, practicing interview skills, applying for jobs and more. Cody is a YPS resident who took part in the programme and feels it helped her a lot.

When I got on the course, I was nervous to meet new people and talk in large groups, but after the first week I was so comfortable that I was able to talk confidently without worrying. The course really boosted my confidence and self-esteem. I would recommend it to others.

What’s coming next

The YPS team are working with the group to help with next steps such as applying for college courses and developing their skills and knowledge further. They’re also encouraging a new group of young people to enrol on the next Prince’s Trust programme, starting in May 2021.

You can find out more about our YPS and the support they offer to young people on our supported accommodation for young people page.
