When did you last test your smoke alarm?
Smoke alarms are a life-saving device, but they are also one of the most neglected.
You should be testing your smoke alarm at least once a month, to make sure it is working properly.
How do I test my smoke alarm?
You can do this by pressing and holding the test button on your smoke alarm. It can take a few seconds to begin, but you should hear a loud, ear-piercing siren while the button is pressed.
If you can’t hear a noise or the sound is weak you need to replace the batteries. Here are a few other simple steps you can take to help reduce the risk of fire in your home:
- Fit a smoke alarm on each level of your home. This includes hallways and the rooms you most often use
- Plan an escape route and make sure everyone knows it, as well as where door and window keys are located
- Make sure you put cigarettes out properly and never smoke in bed.
You can get a free home safety check – also known as a safe and well visit in some areas – from your local fire service.
