Saving water

Why save water?

If you have a water meter, reducing your water use will reduce your water bills. Reducing the amount of water that goes to waste at home also helps protect the wildlife that lives in our rivers and wetlands and cuts down on the energy needed for treating and pumping water for domestic use.

Water saving tips

  • Have showers: have short showers instead of baths as you’ll use less water
  • Turn off the taps: running taps can use up to six litres a minute, so turn it off while brushing your teeth or washing the dishes
  • Use water efficiently: only use your dishwasher and washing machine when it’s full
  • Install a Cistern Displacement Device (CDD): a CDD is a device that you can easily inert into your toilet to use less water when flushed. Thames Water distribute CDDs free of charge to their customers. Contact Thames Water for advice on how to order.

Struggling to pay your water bill?

  • Your water company may offer special to help meet your particular need in the way that you receive your water and sewerage services, such as bills written in large print, disc or braille. Contact your water supplier for more information.
  • If you or someone in your household is in receipt of benefits and has three or more children under 19 or have a medical condition which requires significant additional water use, you may be eligible for help from the WaterSure scheme. This scheme allows you to have your bills capped. To access the WaterSure scheme, you will need to apply through your water company.
  • If you are facing genuine financial difficulty, your water company may be able to offer you help with your water bill through a charitable trust. Some water companies will match each payment the customer makes. So for every £1 that the customer pays, the water company will also pay £1 towards their bill. To apply for help from a charitable trust, contact your water supplier.
