Domestic abuse

Catalyst supports residents who are a victim of domestic abuse by helping them leave the home they are being abused in.

What is domestic abuse?

Domestic abuse is when someone close to you (usually your partner, ex-partner or immediate family member) behaves towards you in a way that causes physical, mental, or emotional damage. It need not necessarily be physical violence – domestic abuse can include psychological, sexual, or financial abuse.

What you can do

  • Tell someone about what is happening to you, especially a doctor, social worker or your neighbourhood manager
  • Report it to the police (you don’t have to press charges)
  • Plan your escape and make up a special code you can use for a friend or relative to call the police
  • Put some emergency money aside for taxi fares
  • Take some of your things to a close friend or relative, and someone you can trust
  • Have a bag packed in case you need to leave in a hurry
  • Keep important documents such as birth certificates, benefit books, immigration papers and marriage certificates in a safe place so you can take them in a hurry
  • After you leave, try not to leave any clues about where you are

In an emergency always call 999.

What Catalyst will do

If you report domestic abuse to Catalyst, we will:

  • Meet you at a time and location that is most convenient to you
  • Allow you to bring a friend to the meeting if it makes you feel more comfortable
  • Treat any information you give us confidentially
  • Work with the police to investigate whether any crime has been committed
  • Refer you to other organisations for more support
  • Improve the security in your home if you do not wish to leave your home
  • If you wish to move home we can refer you to the council for temporary accommodation or help you look for somewhere new to live

Remember we’re here to help, even if all you want to do is to talk to someone.
