A key focus for our Estate Services team is to make sure all our neighbourhoods are clean, safe and welcoming for all our customers. So, we caught up with one of our estate services caretakers, Peter, to find out more about his role and how he supports the ongoing maintenance of the neighbourhood he maintains.

What’s a typical day like for you?

Peter: A typical day involves mopping and sweeping the stairs and lifts, checking all the bin areas for rubbish left on the ground, sorting out the communal bins that have been overfilled and reporting any issues for emergency lighting testing when needed.

What do you like best about your job?

Peter: I love everything about my job. The team I work with are great and very resourceful, and we support each other a lot. Most of our customers are very friendly and appreciate our work.

I enjoy talking to our customers and doing the extra things that I know will help them – reminding them it’s bin day, washing and cleaning out the communal bins, so they’re pleasant for everyone to use. Most customers in my blocks know my ways of working, and it’s a good relationship with understanding. It’s always lovely to hear from a customer a simple ‘Thanks for doing that, Peter.’

What helps you manage your time working alone?

Peter: No matter what, always smile, be polite and understanding, and report any issues troubling you. Sometimes we might see something that seems anti-social or that we’re not sure about – we have a good support network and know that we can talk to our managers about this.

I always listen to what a customer has to say and try to help them however I can, even when it's not something that my team covers. Sometimes they need to contact our office or another team for more help about an issue, but I always try to point them in the right direction.'

What do you like best about working for Catalyst?

Peter: I find working at Catalyst very inspiring and uplifting. Although it’s big, it still has a family feeling, and it’s nice when everyone can get together, evening for training, meetings or just catching up in the main offices.
