With the winter months approaching, it’s a good time to think about how you can save money on your energy bills and be a little more sustainable too.

The government offers various support and initiatives that could help you save money over the coming months.

Government initiatives to help you save this winter

Cold Weather Payment: You could be entitled to the Cold Weather Payment if you’re getting certain benefits or support for mortgage interest.

You’ll get a £25 payment, if the average temperature in your area is recorded as zero degrees or below over seven consecutive days.

You’ll be able to check if your area is due a payment when this year’s scheme starts on 1 November 2021.

Winter Fuel Payment: If you were born on or before 26 September 1955 you could get between £100 and £300 to help you pay your heating bills. This is known as a Winter Fuel Payment.

Warm Home Discount Scheme: You could get £140 off your electricity bill for winter 2021 – 2022, under the Warm Home Discount Scheme.

This is a a one-time discount on your electricity bill, between September and March, paid directly to your energy company.

Help towards the cost of your water bill: Many water companies have  introduced social tariffs that can offer reduced bills to customers on low incomes. Turn2us  has lots of information on the different schemes available.

Vulnerable households support fund:

The government has launched a new support fund offering vulnerable households up to £500 funding to help with essentials such as food, clothing, and utilities.

Home energy inspections: Green Doctor and Agility Eco have currently suspended all home visits due to Covid-19. However, Green Doctor offers free phone consultations to help all customers save energy and money in your home. 

Snap Your Bill: Check whether you’re paying the right price for gas and electricity in your home by using our free Snap Your Bill service.

Pocket Power: Book a free phone session with Pocket Power, to discuss how you can save money on your household bills and access discounts on services such as water and your council tax.
