A message from Ian McDermott, Chief Executive
Yesterday marked the third anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire, and the pain and tragedy of that day still feels very fresh in my mind. Catalyst’s long connection with North Kensington has meant that our organisation felt that pain sharply and we will always do what we can to support those affected.
The current COVID-19 pandemic makes this year even more difficult, with people in the community losing their own lives or those close to them and others being badly affected by the virus.
The housing sector and our approach to fire safety has fundamentally changed because of the Grenfell Tower fire. Collectively, we have taken a far closer look at the make-up of our buildings and we’ve taken several steps to make sure they are safe now and in the future. We have also made concentrated efforts to listen and engage better with our customers.
I’ve been fortunate enough to meet and speak to members of Grenfell United, and their bravery and calm determination in the face of adversity greatly inspires me. These are ordinary people that have been forced to deal with extraordinary and traumatic circumstances, and I am in awe of their ability to keep campaigning for change and for safer buildings.
At Catalyst, we are wholly committed to following the recommendations both from the Hackitt Report and the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 1 report. We will continue to work closely with both central government and local authorities to do what is necessary to protect our customers. We will also continue to engage with our residents, to understand and listen to their concerns and comments.
