To promote the wide range of jobs and careers available in housing, development and construction, Catalyst recently hosted a site visit for employment advisors and mentors from Step2Skills at Hertfordshire County Council’s Adult Care Services.

The visit took place at housing association Catalyst’s development Roan Place in Harpenden that’s currently in construction.

Members of Catalyst’s Development team working on the project, along with the site manager from contractor partner Taylor French Developments, were joined by council organisations including Step2Skills and the neurodiverse team, who help connect Hertfordshire residents who are furthest away from employment with local employers.

Following a welcome from Catalyst’s Development Managers Marc Pearce-Fulker and Liam Bennett, and Dean Digby, Site Manager from Taylor French Developments, the hosts gave an insight into their roles, how they came to work in housing and construction, and why they enjoy what they do.

The visit concluded with a full site tour, giving an insight into the many different skills needed to build new homes and communities, including the many vital ‘behind the scenes’ roles.

Roan Place in Harpenden is one of Catalyst’s current developments in construction in the home counties and will bring 24 affordable new homes which are due to complete next spring, with the development and road name reflecting the town’s history.

Marc Pearce-Fulker, Development Manager at Catalyst said:

‘We were delighted to arrange for Anne and her colleagues to visit our site in Harpenden to show first-hand all the different skills needed in housing, development and construction.

‘Housing associations, and the construction contractors and organisations we work in partnership with, offer so many fulfilling roles, career paths and entry level opportunities for people in the local area. We look forward to working more with the Adult Care Services team and arranging further visits to other sites to inform and inspire the team and those they support.’

Anne Tinker, Employer Liaison Officer at Hertfordshire County Council’s Step2Skills, told us:

‘I just wanted to say a big thank you to all of you for such an interesting, insightful and motivating afternoon. You were all so welcoming and your love for your roles is so apparent and being able to share your stories gave us a clear indication of the many career routes offered at Catalyst and more widely in housing and development.

‘If my colleagues and I had not attended, we wouldn’t have known the endless possibilities and opportunities there could be for those we’re helping to secure work, prospects and interesting and fulfilling jobs with companies that value everybody’s skills. I’m sure this is just the start of a very successful collaboration!’
