For our summer programme we teamed up with London Bike Hub to introduce a free cycling programme in our neighbourhoods. We also worked with Sustrans to offer free cycling activity packs throughout the summer.

As part of this partnership London Bike Hub visited 12 of our neighbourhoods throughout our communities, offering bike servicing and cycling awareness and safety training. The Bike Hub’s standard bikeability course is aimed at young people aged 10-11 years, and normally runs for four days. For the summer programme we broke it down into short sessions for our families and young people to enjoy.

Nick Manthorpe, from London Bike Hub, said the highlight for him was getting three new residents cycling at Havelock. ‘The look of joy on their faces when they realise that they’re cycling by themselves is priceless. If you can give someone a life skill, and cycling is a life skill, they can use it for life.’

We received positive feedback from customers about the sessions, who found them really useful. We even heard from one customer who was so pleased the sessions helped fix their bike, which helped them get back on the road to cycle to work.

We established a really good working relationship with partners like the London Bike Hub and Sustrans. Sustrans created a cycle activity pack that we sent out to all participants, with fun bike-related activities and helpful info on how to look after you bike.

Future partnership plans

After the programme’s success our Communities team have been discussing options to continue a similar offer.

As part of the regeneration of the Havelock estate, we are transforming 36 disused garages into meanwhile-use community spaces for customers on the estate in Southall. The current idea is that London Bike Hub will use one of those units as a cycling hub for the local community.

We hope to offer a similar programme as part of our next summer programme. If you’d like to find out how our Communities team can help you and your local community, or want to get involved with future programmes get in touch.
