Our summer programme: a virtual success

Due to Covid-19, our Communities team delivered a packed calendar of online events for families and young people. There were lots of virtual activities for our younger customers such as boxing, drama and music clubs.

We had 100 free art and sports activity packs available to help keep children aged 8-13 years, entertained as part of our 2020 programme.

Throughout July and August, we ran online employability and advice workshops for young people aged 15 to 25-years.

Brenda is a customer and she found out about the summer programme after reading about it in our Catalyst customer magazine. Brenda’s 9-year-old daughter got involved with various activities, including a music club, street dance, a drama session with SPID theatre and cycling sessions. All were virtual, except for our socially distanced cycling session, which included a bike service and minor repairs, and training session to develop cycling confidence and road awareness.

SPID drama was one of our delivery partners on the summer programme this year. They ran two projects to help anyone aged 8-13 years stay connected and get creative, while they couldn’t get out and visit their friends during the summer months.

Brenda was concerned about her daughter not being able to see her family and friends, so she was grateful for the summer programme. She said it was great to have something that she could look forward to.

My daughter thoroughly enjoyed the drama sessions because it brought her out of her shell. She is a very expressive person. When you first meet her, she is very quiet, you think she doesn’t talk much. So, I think drama helps her to express her feelings.’

Brenda was really pleased with the interactive sessions as she was working fulltime and was happy there was a different activity each weekday to help keep her daughter entertained. In a post Covid-19 world, Brenda would like to see a mixture of both virtual and face-to-face sessions offered.
