Protecting yourself from scams
Scammers are continuously looking for new ways to get personal information and sometimes money from people.
There are lots of ways to say safe that are simple to do. You should also make sure you know how to recognise potential scams, including how to report them.
What is a scam?
A scam is a fake company, idea or concept contrived to con the target people. This could be to share personal information, access confidential files or get money.
Scams can come in various forms. Have you ever had someone contact you saying you’ll win a prize if you provide your credit card details? Or asking you to donate money to a charity that doesn’t exist? This is a scam.
You can be contacted in various ways such as by phone, email or even in person at your front door.
Some possible signs of a scam include:
- An unexpected call or email asking for personal information
- An email out of the blue that asks you to click on a link or open an attachment
- Communication from a company you don’t usually deal with
- A ‘pushy’ or persistent call or email that promises something you’re unaware of – this could be reward or a threat.
Here’s a few ways to protect yourself:
- Never give out personal details such as bank details, your address or existing insurance/pensions/investment details over the phone or email
- Reject offers that come out of the blue, and remember – if it seems too good to be true, it probably is
- Beware of adverts on social media channels and paid for/sponsored online adverts
- Do not click on links or open emails from senders you don’t already know
- Do your research and be aware of where you buy your products from
- Avoid being rushed or pressured into a decision, especially when you are being asked for money
- Use the Financial Services Register and Warning List to check on any companies you’re thinking of using.
If you receive any phone calls from anyone saying they’re calling on our behalf of us, it’s important you report this to Action Fraud and also let us know.
We’ll never ask you to confirm your identity by asking for your bank details. If anyone knocks at your door saying they are from Catalyst, we’ll always show photograph identification. If you’re still unsure, close the door and ask them to wait while you contact us to clarify.
