Residents come together for Dee Park Spring Event
Almost 200 Dee Park residents turned up to join the festivities at the Spring Community Event on Saturday 8 April. We hosted the event in partnership with local businesses ThinkLockhart, Nature Nurture and locally based international artist, Lisa-Marie Gibbs.
There were lots of events for the whole family and people of all ages. These included the educational and fun ‘small animals ‘marquee for toddlers and young children, as well as an interactive puppet show. Older children had the option of trying their hand at go-kart mechanic maintenance, outdoor yoga sessions, or joining in with the rest of the family for fun creative sessions.
Other events on the day included:
• art and wellbeing sessions with artist Lisa-Marie Gibbs
• trying out augmented reality with goggles – viewing the historic Reading Abbey ruin as a virtual replica of how it would have looked in its prime
• wild nature activities in Lousehill Copse including art, bug hunting and bug bingo, pond dipping and theatrical safaris and games
The event was also attended by several key services. Thames Valley community police team took the opportunity to get to know local residents better, and West Cluster local children’s centre also came along to meet local people, and let them know what services they have for babies and toddlers.
One of the main topics of the day was how Catalyst and our Neighbourhood Strategy partners can work with residents to develop future family activities, make great use of green spaces in the neighbourhood and offer health and wellbeing opportunities. Many residents signed up to volunteer in the community.
The next event will be the Dee Park Summer Event on Saturday 19 August. We will also be running a summer holiday programme in Reading from Monday 14 August to Friday 18 August, for 6-12 year olds. Admission is £3 a day, and the programme will be held at the Ranikhet Academy.
