Reaching new heights

catalyst-qpr-2-of-111When June Grant went to a Catalyst jobs fair at Windmill Park in Southall, she never thought she would land her dream job…

We all need some time-out after leaving university and June was no different. After a few months, June decided she was ready for work and a career in business administration would be ideal.

“One day a leaflet came through the letterbox at home and it mentioned the support Catalyst provides to residents looking for work. So, I phoned up and went to meet Hibo.”

At the jobs fair in Windmill Park, June didn’t find anything she was interested in or qualified to do. So Hibo arranged for her to join other residents to study for a Construction Skills Certification Scheme card at Acton College.

This was a vital first step to getting a career in construction as you can’t go on-site without it. After she completed the course, Hibo and Kowsar from Catalyst Gateway (our community enterprise team) helped June develop her CV and look for jobs.

Lucky for June, a job at the Higgins office in our new St Bernard’s Gate development in Hanwell became available. Our team helped June prepare for the interview by going through some practice questions and answers.

We’re happy to report that June got the job and now works as a trainee administration officer. Her job involves supporting the site surveyors in keeping the building progress drawings up-to-date and helping the other administration officer.

June says: “It’s a challenging job, but I enjoy learning about the building process and what contractors do. It’s also very nearby to my home.”

Getting the job with Higgins has also given June more independence and control over her life. “I focused on getting a job and I did it,” June said. “It means that I have more independence now. And I can go on short break holidays at the weekend.” .

So would June recommend coming to Catalyst for help to look for a job or training?“Most definitely. My colleagues at St Bernard’s Gate are really nice lovely people. And I’ve had so much support from Catalyst. Especially Hibo and Kowsar, who have been fabulous and fantastic.”

But our support doesn’t just stop now that June has a job. We’ve recently arranged for June to be assessed at her workplace about starting an NVQ administration course.
