QPR and Brentford team up with Catalyst
Younger residents from Friary Park, Westcott Park, and Leamington Estate took part in a football tournament on 1 September, organised by Catalyst Gateway and helped by coaches from QPR and Brentford Football club.
The tournament, in which 30 young people aged 8-16 years took part, was a chance for the young footballers to show off their skills learnt at weekly coaching sessions on their estates throughout this year.
Gateway had organised weekly football coaching sessions, and called on the expertise of coaches from Queen’s Park Rangers and Brentford to help out. QPR coached the kids at Friary Park in Acton, while Brentford coach at Windmill Park and Havelock in Southall.
As well as the opportunity to learn new sports and physical skills, both the coaching and the tournament was a opportunity for younger residents from neighbouring estates to mix.
Omina Ahmed, who’s son Omar (11) takes part in the weekly sessions and tournament, says that the social aspect of the coaching sessions and tournament is a great benefit.
“It’s a great way of meeting kids from other backgrounds and ages, and provides a lot of benefit in learning about teamwork and other social skills,” Omima said.
