Volunteering open day: 9 May
As well as being a foster carer, working as a teaching assistant and having a part-time job at Hillingdon Council, Takiyah gives up two hours of her time each week to volunteer on the Re-Up youth programme at the Windmill Park Youth Club in Southall.
“Working at the youth club is interesting. We have young men who are difficult to engage with. But I’m new here and over time I’m hoping to build up my trust with them so I can help them in their career and personal lives,” she says.
Takiyah has been volunteering at Catalyst since November 2014. On the Re-Up initiative in Kensington, she mentored young people going through difficult times with their personal issues. In Brent, Takiyah volunteered at our Way Forward Summer Project where she worked to engage young people during the summer holidays.
Volunteering has also helped boost Takiyah’s confidence and given her the experience she needed to gain employment. “I knew I wanted to work with young people so I applied for the volunteering opportunity. By volunteering at Catalyst, I got the experience I needed to pursue my career in youth work.”
The future looks even bigger and brighter for Takiyah. She’s hoping to finish her degree in contemporary education/youth work, and then study for PGCE so she can become a teacher. “I want to continue to help young people help themselves and pursue their dreams. I would urge other people to do the same,” Takiyah says.
