Catalyst tells six new apprentices – You’re hired!

Catalyst Housing Group’s (CHG) charitable arm Catalyst Gateway is taking the lead in launching a brand new apprenticeship scheme for housing professionals. It’s now recruiting 6 housing apprentices for a year-long placement with the potential for formal qualifications.

The programme comes on the back of the successful future jobs fund scheme, which resulted in a number of participants finding full-time employment at Catalyst.

CHG are in the first cohort of Registered Social Landlords (RSLs) to offer the new housing apprenticeship scheme, which for the first time results in credits than can be used towards housing qualifications. CHG is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Housing and the Open College Network.

Alongside this scheme, Catalyst is taking steps to become a training provider to help CHG residents attain the basic skills needed to access apprenticeships. By applying for accreditation from City and guilds it will begin to offer NVQ courses to residents later this year.

These apprenticeships come on top of the agreements CHG have with its construction partners. For every contract worth more than £1 million contractors must offer at least one apprenticeship. This has led to successful apprenticeships at Willmott Dixon, Higgins, Just Ask and Morrison. CHG intend to keep the new scheme under review, with the hope of extending it to 10 apprenticeships a year in future.

Leanne Baxter, MD of Catalyst Gateway (CHG’s charitable arm) said:

“We want to be more than just a housing provider. By being able to offer apprenticeships and training we’re able to make a real difference to people’s futures as well as providing a roof and four walls. It’s also fantastic opportunity for us to find and develop new talent and build on the success of our future jobs fund trainee programme.”

Gordon Keenan, Head of Funding and Partnerships, National Housing Federation said:

“ The creation of quality ‘in house’ Apprenticeships such as these is a tremendous step. It is what being a social landlord is all about. Catalyst are not just building homes, they are building a future for young adults in particular by creating quality employment & training opportunities for residents.

“At a time when job opportunities are hard to come Catalyst are creating quality posts available to residents at a decent wage. The Federation sees the creation of Apprenticeships as vitally important for the sector and we will assist Catalyst in every way we can to secure more resources to create further opportunities. ”
