External Wall Insulation
External wall insulation (EWI) was used to insulate the rear addition of 12 Palmer Park Avenue. It would not have been possible to use IWI to insulate this part of the building without severely compromising the room sizes. The external insulation (389KB) supplied by Structherm comprises 90mm thick phenolic board; this is fixed in position to the external walls with new reveals formed around window and door openings. The insulation is then overlaid with mesh and rendered. The overall wall u-value achieved was 0.20 W/m²K.
Replacement Doors
The doors installed are timber ‘thermL’ doors supplied by JbKind, the doors comprise an oak panelled outer leaf with an insulated inner core to give a U value of 1.8 W/m2K. The doors have been fitted with draught excluders and brush seals to ensure airtightness.
Lighting
All existing traditional, incandescent lamps were replaced with 15W compact fluorescent low energy lamps (CFLs). The CFL lamps have a life expectancy of 10, 000 hours compared with a 1000 hour life expectancy of a traditional 60W incandescent lamp. The 15W CFLs have a similar output to a 60W incandescent lamps, thus giving a 75% energy saving.
