Gas safety

Lots of homes rely on gas for heating, hot water and cooking. But faulty gas fires, boilers and cookers can be deadly

By law, we have to check all our gas appliances each year to make sure they are safe. To help us to do this, you must let the engineer in so they can carry out the check.

What is a gas check?

An engineer will check and service all gas appliances that Catalyst owns, such as gas fires and boilers. They will also check the gas supply pipes.

Is it necessary?

Faulty or poorly maintained gas appliances are dangerous. This is why we must check all our appliances every year.

Do I pay for it?

It’s free to get a gas safety check.

Who does it?

A gas safety registered engineer will carry it out.

How long does it take?

The check and service only takes about 40 minutes.

Do I need to be there?

You must be there to let the gas safety engineer in. The engineer will write to let you know when they plan to visit. If it’s not convenient you must arrange another appointment. Remember – by law – we have to carry out this annual check and you have to let the engineer in. If you keep missing your appointments we may have to take legal action and take you to court. As a last resort we may even re-possess your home. We hope we’ll never need to do that but we won’t hesitate to take action if the health and safety of our residents, or their neighbours, is at risk.

What happens if an appliance is faulty?

The engineer will fix the problem straight away if they can. If they can’t, they will disconnect the gas supply to that appliance. We will fix the problem as soon as possible. Never reconnect an appliance that has been disconnected.

What to do in an emergency

If you smell gas, or think that there may be a gas leak:

  • report it immediately to the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999
  • don’t use electrical switches
  • shut off the gas supply at the meter
  • put out all naked flames
  • open doors and windows
  • leave the house
