This summer’s warm and wet weather has been perfect to help spread the dreaded potato blight. Consequently, the Potato Council have suggested that the growing number of ‘allotment amateurs’ have also had a part to play in the worst potato crops in 35 years.
Not knowing the signs of danger, spuds are growing unchecked, spreading the airborne disease to commercial crops. It is important to keep an eye out for any signs of blight, and treat it. If you grow potatoes, bag, bin, and, where possible, burn any affected plants.
The Potato Council has produced a fact sheet that explains in more detail what to look out for and how to control potato blight.
