Catalyst appoints architects for Phase 3 of major regeneration
Catalyst has appointed Conran + Partners as the architects for Phase 3 of Portobello Square, the major regeneration scheme of its Wornington Green estate.
The architectural practice won a bidding process where they presented proposals to Catalyst’s development team and the Wornington Green Residents’ Steering Group. The quality of the design work impressed the panel, as did Conran + Partners’ extensive experience in estate regeneration.
The architects will now work with Catalyst to develop detailed designs for Phase 3. This process will involve engaging with the local community and residents in order to incorporate their ideas and feedback into the final designs. Consultation events are scheduled to be complete by the summer of 2018, and Catalyst intends to submit a planning application the following winter.
Conran + Partners already has extensive knowledge of the project and existing community, having provided the detailed designs for Phase 2, which is currently under construction.
Victoria Whenray, Director, Conran and Partners comments: “We are delighted to have been appointed to work on the third and final phase of Portobello Square. This builds on our experience of Phase 2 of the project and the wide-ranging knowledge we already have of the area. We look forward to continuing our work with Catalyst to support its ambition to reinvigorate this iconic part of London, which has a strong community focus.
“As with Phase 2, we are able to draw on our knowledge of designing across many different typologies – including residential – to deliver a proposal that is both contextual and relevant. Our design approach seeks to reinstate much of the original Victorian street pattern that existed at the northern end of Portobello Road until the early 1970s, re-establishing a distinct identity and character and a clear sense of neighbourhood.”
Tom Titherington, Executive Director of Property of Growth at Catalyst, said: “Despite the excellent quality of submissions, it was clear that Conran + Partners were the best candidates to carry out the detailed design for Phase 3. We are sure that they will be able to build on the good work they did for the second phase.
“One of the key successes of Portobello Square has been its tenure-blind design. Phase 3 will continue to be a genuinely mixed and integrated neighbourhood, where there is no discernible difference between the high quality social housing and the homes for sale.”
