Sheltered housing

Sheltered housing is designed for older people. It provides convenient and comfortable housing where residents can come and go as they please

In sheltered housing you can lead your life privately and independently, but you will have our support when you need it, and you will live in a safe, secure and sociable environment.

‘Sheltered housing is a brilliant answer for me, absolutely fantastic, because I’m getting the support I need and if I need any help it’s there’, John, Melody Court resident.

Sheltered housing can offer:

  • a flat that is safe, warm and easy to maintain
  • a social life where you can make new friends if you wish
  • assistance in case of sudden illness or accident

Your questions answered

How is sheltered housing different to my normal housing situation?

It is really important to us that residents lead an independent life, with support when it’s needed. Every flat and communal area has a warden controlled alarm system. So in an emergency, help is at hand.

Who offers support?

A sheltered scheme manager will make sure you are alright, and be there if you need support, Monday to Friday. Out of hours there is a warden call service to deal with emergenices.

The scheme maanager will also encourage social activities and events (always voluntarily attended of course!) and they will be able to get medical or other assistance if you need it. If you have any problems, repairs or complaints you can ask the sheltered scheme manager to help.

What support is offered?

We are there to make you safe and comfortable. We will make sure that you are alright on a regular basis, and we will make sure your home is secure and in good repair. We also help organise social events. If you need advice in obtaining any additional help you may need, such as nursing or a cleaning service, we will help you with that too.

‘The support we are given – support which is there if required and which in one way or another is there 24/7 – is not only good for residents but also for their families who have the satisfaction of knowing that a loved one is looked after’, Colin, Hopley House resident.

What is there to do?

There are always social and communal activities going on throughout our sheltered housing schemes. We will support residents in organising events and we always want to hear new ideas. Most schemes have their own social club committee, which you would be more than welcome to join.

‘We all get on together extremely well, we had a really good trip to Bournemouth in August by coach’, Peter, Sahaara Court resident.

How do I apply?

To bid for a place in a sheltered housing scheme you must be registered either with the local authority for the area you are interested in, or with your local Catalyst office. You will be assessed to make sure that sheltered housing is right for you.
