The Greenway, Hounslow

The Greenway in Hounslow is Catalyst’s flagship sustainable development scheme.

The Greenway was officially opened in November 2012 and provides 18 new homes.

This zero carbon development was the first in London to simultaneously meet the highest standards in three key sustainability measures: the mayor of London’s housing design guidelines, the new ‘code 6′ level of the Code for Sustainable Homes standard and the recently updated Lifetime Homes Standard.

The Greenway has won ‘best sustainable scheme’ at the 2013 National Housing Awards and ‘best sustainable smaller new housing project (fewer than 25 homes)’ at the Sustainable Housing Awards. It was also highly commended in three separate categories at the 2013 Sustainable City Awards, voted ‘best small development’ by the readers of First Time Buyer magazine and won a silver award at the Green Apple Awards.

Developing this former petrol station site into environmentally friendly homes has considerably enhanced the streetscape of the area.

The building envelope is highly insulated and airtight which will reduce the amount of energy required to heat it. The site incorporates many environmentally friendly features, including:

  • a passive cooling system to all homes
  • allotments featuring an orchard of dwarf fruit trees
  • photovoltaic panels to generate free electricity
  • rainwater harvesting for flushing WCs.
