Gas safety

Why is carbon monoxide so dangerous?

You can’t see it. You can’t taste it. You can’t even smell it. But carbon monoxide can kill, without warning, in just a few hours. Even low levels can cause brain damage or death.

What are the danger signs?
Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include:
  • drowsiness
  • weakness
  • headaches
  • nausea
  • pains in the chest

Also look out for other signs of trouble:

  • The flame in the gas appliance is yellow or orange and not blue.
  • Sooty stains appear on or just above the appliance.
  • There is condensation in the room where the appliance is.
  • The fire is difficult to light.
  • The room is not properly ventilated.
  • The chimney or flue is blocked – watch out for smoke in the room.

If you think something may be wrong with a gas appliance – turn it off immediately and report it!
